New Drawing of Prince Kaj!

As requested by a fan, here is a new drawing with Kaj and his falcon companion, Rayen. I’m so glad the gold on her wings is on the bottom, outside part of her wings…  No I did not want to color in the gold, hence why we don’t see that part of her wings. Mwahaha. :) Anyway, I really love Kaj’s expression. It makes me giggle. What do you think his expression is saying?

Hottest Old Elf You’ll Ever See

What would you look like if you were a 23,718,192-year-old male elf? Well, my friend, you would look like this (See picture). Oh, Gælehndariel, how much I adore you *sigh*. However, I do not like how long it took me to draw you! All out color takes FOREVER!

Anyway, an interview with this wonderful elf friend of mine is coming. Until then, here is a sneak peek of him from the novel:

“Kaj stared at [the man] wondering why he didn’t feel like questioning the stranger. He still couldn’t make out the tall man’s face. The only visible parts were his chin and mouth. The shadows that hid him were bluer than any shadow Kaj had ever seen on a human in normal light, and the locks of hair that fell from behind his cloak hood were too golden to be real.

The man nodded at [Kaj] and almost bowed before he sat down. Still Kaj stared. He knew this person was not filled with the evil he had anticipated, but there was something about him that made Kaj wary. Taking a moment, Kaj narrowed his thoughts and tried to look beyond what he was seeing. The second his head cleared of the obvious, he saw a flash of the man’s true features. His hair was not actually gold but bluish-purple, and the shadows were not actually odd colored, but were hiding the man’s eyes, which were glowing blue.

Kaj gasped in a moment of realization, and he flashed his gaze to the long, thin blade resting at the man’s side. It wasn’t forged anywhere in Alëunná. He knew that for a fact.

Is he an elf? Rayen thought.”

The Land Beyond the Portal by J.S. Bailey

Dear reader, I am so thrilled to share with you a book I read from a fellow Tate Punishing author: J.S. Bailey. She is a wonderful young woman with a very intelligent mind. Even with her intelligence, she has this way of writing that even people like me can understand! Here is what I have to say about her novel, the Land Beyond the Portal:

Through J.S. Bailey’s novel, I was taken on an adventure I did not expect to traverse. I found myself in the position of her main character, Lara. I was shivering on a cold winter’s day, losing my memory, and traveling through a portal to a different world, a different time. As I found myself exploring this new place with Lara, I stumbled upon a small village and was immersed into their traditions. Slowly, I even learned of their secrets and found myself in a dangerous position.

Since I find myself wishing I knew more about all the other characters, not just Lara, I give Bailey’s novel a 4 out of 5 star rating. However, Bailey’s writing style was a breath of fresh air, and her story line was well developed. I greatly enjoyed the adventure and look forward to Bailey’s future works.

Check out The Land Beyond the Portal for yourself and let me know what you think in the comments bellow!

Interview with Cäel Garanger

Today I have one of the famous characters from Orphan of the Shadows with me. Cäellamar Digery Garanger, better known as Cäel. He is a sixteen-year-old boy that happens to be a member of a powerful gang known as the Dragons. As a spy for the gang, he knows his way around the city, but Cäel is also a talented guitar player and fantastic cook! I should know; he made me cookies! I wish you could just smell them; they make my head dizzy with delight… But, I won’t rub it in that you don’t get to eat these scrumptious-looking, right-out-of-the-oven, chocolate chip cookies… Instead I’ll say: Cäel, I am so glad you were able to join us today!

Cäel: (Laughs at me as I whip chocolate from my mouth) Any chance I get to share the joy of food with a friend, I’m on it.

Abby: Glad to know, but next time, maybe you should make crab Rangoon. You know, cuz that’s one of the things you told Elon you can cook. You said in Orphan of the Shadows that your mom taught you.

Cäel: (Shrugs) Perhaps, I haven’t actually made them since my mom died.

Abby: O, gosh, well scratch that idea. Sorry to bring it up.

Cäel: (Solemn expression that makes me want to hug him!) It’s okay. My mom was cool, and I miss her, but I have my big bro, Braerr, and my little sister, Glynnii. I even have the rest of the Dragons. We are a big family.

Abby: I’m glad you feel that way. I wouldn’t want you sad, Cäel. You sure make Elon happy. You know, it’s odd that everyone thinks of her as the only orphan in Orphan of the Shadows, but in reality, you, Braerr, and Glynnii are orphans, too.

Cäel: (Shrugs) But Elon’s story is different. She doesn’t have a family like the Dragons. It was her and the streets and the friends she could make out there. Life is hard when you’re on the run. I’m so glad Braerr found her. She really is my best bud now.

Abby: Yeah, that is cool how it all happened. But enough about Elon, this interview is for us to get to know you better. So the first official question of mine is: what made you pick the ax as your weapon? You obvious have little interest in the sword.

Cäel: (Blushing, probably in memory of his awful sword duel with Elon in of OotS) I’m just an ax kind of guy. You know, you can chop down trees! Killing ghoulish beasts like the Niesin is just a plus…

Abby: (giggles) Oh, Cäel, what strange philosophies you have… Anyway, I want to know something. In Orphan of the Shadows, you told Elon that you weren’t good at speaking her native language, Classic Máhûlèn. Yet it seemed to me that you were so much better than you lead on. Were you just trying to con her into learning your Aluens language?

Cäel: (Clears throat) Um, if I said yes, Elon would probably hunt me down… so I’m just not going to answer that.

Abby: Perhaps that’s wise… well it looks like we only have time for a final question. I hear rumors going around that you have left your beloved Dragon gang? Is this true?

Cäel: That’s a secret to be revealed in Orphan of the Shadows sequel, The Black Trinity. I don’t think I’m aloud to say.

Abby: … What!? You know secrets don’t make friends!

Cäel: But secrets lead into great stories. So, all I’m going to say is that with my current plans, I’ve been forced to perfect my Classic Máhûlèn.

Abby: All right, all right. On all terms, it was great talking to you. Any final words?

Cäel: Yeah, you need to update my profile picture. Everyone else is getting pictures in color. It’s like you’ve forgotten me. And what ever happened to that drawing you were doing of my dragon tattoo? And—

Abby: And that’s enough of that. See you later Cäel!

Cäel: (Laughs at me again… No, I didn’t just nock the cookies over!!!)

—-

My friend the reader, what are your thoughts? Did Cäel tell you everything you wanted to know? Leave your thoughts in the comments! Maybe we can probe more answers out of him if we bug him enough. :)

The Thief

Dear Reader, it would be hypocritical of me to share a writing tip and not do it myself. That is what brings about today. I want to prove to you that every writing tip I give, I use. The one I want to bring to the forefront of your mind is Tip # 2.4: Read the books you loved again. (Click here for a deeper explanation.)

Recently I picked up a book from my honorary book shelf. The majority of the books on this shelf are books that have greatly inspired my writing over the past 13 years. One of these is titled The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. I first read the novel back in the eighth grade for my reading class, and it greatly influenced the way I write.

The Thief is written in 1st person, and Turner used a candid voice for her narrating character, Gen. He was blunt about many things, yet had a sense of dry humor that made me laugh more often than not. At the same time, there was a huge secret Gen kept from the reader. This secret was hinted to a few times throughout the novel, but not fully revealed until the very end.

I had wanted to read this book slower for my second time, but I was so in love that I just zipped through it again. However, I want to point out that reading it again was not only fun but beneficial to my writing now days. Turner’s leading character, Gen, strongly reminds me of my character Albree. They both love to pretend they don’t care about the world around them, but in reality, they care a lot. They also keep secrets from the reader, and they like to shock those readers with the truth.

By reading The Thief, I also relearned that it is perfectly fine to tell the readers about things. I don’t have to always show the reader what is happening in the story. What I mean by this tell and show. Is as follows:

Example of tell: Mandy went to the party and realized she had been wrongly informed about the party’s attire. It was not a costume party, but a black and white party.

Example of show: Mandy rung the door bell and anxiously waited for the host to let her into the party. The moment he did, her anxiety was crushed by a wave of horror. She was tempted to rap her arms around her body and hid the sexy, bunny costume she was in. No one else there was dressed in a costume. Everyone was in black and white finery…

In my writing style now days, I do prefer to show my story, but there are times when telling has its place. Thank you Megan Whalen Turner for reminding me of that!

For those of you who love books like my Orphan of the Shadows, (Or absolutely love my character Albree) Be sure to check out The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. You won’t be disappointed. I know, I read it. 8)

Close-up with the Queen

Queen hAmari

Recently I received a request from a fan to draw Queen hAmari (the ‘H’ in her name is silent). Those of you who have read Orphan of the Shadows know that hAmari is the ruler over the entire Realm of Alëunná (the realm the book takes place in). We don’t know much about her personality, but we know that she is powerful. Why is she powerful? Because she is the vessel of the Alëunná Spirit, (which is explained more in the books).  Here is a quick peek of hAmari from the book itself:

Queen hAmari gracefully walked through the brightly lit hallways of Cair Acrion. It was her home, a castle in the sky, which floated about to wherever it willed above the Realm of Alëunná. In her hand the Queen held a staff made of magical willow bark, possessing a large purple gem at its tip. Even when she wasn’t using it, she could feel its power surging through her bones, but that power was growing faint. She was not old in any way, but lately she was beginning to feel drained. She felt as if half of her was somewhere else while the other half was left behind in an effort to hold her being together. That was the case, and it almost scared her. Half of her was missing—slowly draining out; it was leaving to find another girl to live in.
hAmari was dying. (click here to read more)

– From Orphan of the Shadows, Page 20

It never occurred to me that hAmari was a character the readers would want to see. As the author, I was more caught up in Elon and Kaj and of course all the Dark side people… But I’m glad you fans are attracted to hAmari as well. It was a delight drawing her!  Tell me what you think in the comments! And if there’s anyone else you want me to draw or redraw, let me know. I love hearing your input!

Writing Tips: for authors and rising authors alike

So you want a few tips on writing eh? Well you’ve come to the right place! Here you will find writing tips straight from me, Abby Ryan. Please note that these tips all work for me, and it would do you well to pick and choose what works for you! Everyone writes differently, but every writer can learn from other writers.

Tip # 1. Read. You will probably hear that from everyone who is a published author. Read books in your genera. Read books in other generals. Read. Read. Read. You may wonder why this is so important, so, my dear apprentice, let me explain. By reading, we writers gain inspiration. We learn how other authors make their characters interact. We learn how a story progresses. We learn new words. We learn cool new phrases. We LEARN! You cannot write a decent story without reading. Sometimes you can read one AMAZING book, and it will inspire and fuel the next story you write. Sometimes you have to read 3-5 books before you finish writing a book. It all depends.

Tip # 2.1 Pay attention while you read. Watch how an author puts their words together. (Example, I might say “His heart broke like glass”). Look for those great little descriptions to help make your writing more colorful.

Tip #2.2 Notice when you read how an author uses foreshadowing. Good authors are able to sprinkle this wonderful tool throughout the beginning of their story, which will hint the reader to the events in the end. Great authors can use foreshadowing as a tool to trick readers and keep them on their toes. I find it so much fun to make a reader think they know what is going to happen, and then pull the rug out under them. However, that is a delicate game to play. So keep in mind this advice I was once given “Give your readers what they want, but in a way they don’t expect.”

Tip # 2.3 Make everything have a purpose. Again, this is something both good and great authors do. As they write, there is little to no fluff in their story. Fluff bores readers, but if there is a seemingly unimportant necklace in the book and it turns out to actually have importance to your story, your readers will be enthralled.

Note: When everything in your story has a purpose, your story also gains a wonderful mixture of complexity that keeps things interesting.

Tip # 2.4 Read the books you loved again. Why? Well because often times we find ourselves reading a book we like quickly the first time. There’s nothing wrong with that. But it is definitely beneficial to read the book a second time. It is then you can pick their writing apart, notice all the little strategies they use, and start applying them to your own writing.

Tip # 3. Notice your characters personalities. Good writers know how to make all their characters have a personality. Try and keep your characters diverse. Perhaps have one that is very talkative and one that is very moody… There are so many options! Just think of all the people you know. Each person is different. So should your characters be.

Tip # 4. Watch for inspiration. It is literally everywhere. I found it in high school when someone fell asleep in class. I found it in the way my best friend giggles or in the way she hates birds. I found it in the weather, in movies, at work. If you keep your eyes open, you will never lose your edge. Instead you will constantly be thinking “how can I put that into my book” and you will be writing nonstop!

Tip # 5.1 Don’t over think your story! This can sometimes lead to writers block. It can also make a book that would have taken 3 months to write 2 years or more. How do you not over think your story? Well, you look at the blank page and tell yourself, “Okay. I’m a good writer. I know what I’m doing. This story is in me, and I know what I need to do to get it out.” It may sound silly, but trust me, believing in yourself is essential to good writing. Even if you don’t think you know what to write. You do! That’s the thing about being a writer, the story is in you. You just need to relax and let the words come out on their own.

Tip # 5.2 Go with the first idea you have. When you’re staring at that blank screen or starting a new chapter and you have no idea how to begin, use the first words that pop into your mind. Just go with them! It could be “the pickle jar was empty…” or “Kerry ran around the corner, her breath gasping from her mouth in puffs of white, but she dared not stop….” If you decide you don’t like the line, change it later. Just go on and write that chapter. You can come back once your done. Just remember don’t over think your story because that can lead to writers block!

Tip # 6. Write what you love!

There you have it, my first 6 Author tips. If you have any questions or want to ask my help or advice on your own writing, be sure to leave a comment. I am more than happy to help you, my fellow writer, along.

Albree Tells a Story

Okay, so some of you know who Albree is. But for those of you who have not read Orphan of the Shadows, let me clue you in. He’s an 18 year old prince who’s life is sadly engrossed in the Dark side of the Light and Dark Chronicles. He acts obnoxious, pretends to be careless, and is an awfully tormented character we find hard to hate. Instead, we find ourselves feeling sorry for him because of the way his evil little sister, Sheva, treats him. (A boiling scar on his arm is just one of the cruel things she does with her black magic). But what about in the past? Before their lives turned upside down? Did he and Sheva get along? Well, you’re about to find out as Albree Tells a Story:

“What are you doing in my room!” nine-year-old Albree cried to his little sister. His purple eyes were wide in fright as he hugged his bathrobe close to his body, afraid she might see too much of his bare little being. “You’re supposed to be in bed now, Sheva. You’re going to get us both in trouble if mom finds you here.”

His little sister looked up to him innocently with her big, ice-blue eyes. “I couldn’t sleep,” she said. Albree’s brow narrowed, silently asking why that mattered to him. He got his answer the moment Sheva rushed his way and wrapped her little arms around his waist in a loving hug. She said, “Tarrek can’t tell me a bedtime story because he isn’t feeling well. But he always tells me a story before I go to bed.” Her next words were beseeching as she gave him her best puppy-dog face, “Albree, will you please tell me a story!”

After prying her arms away, Albree brushed his wet, black hair out of his eyes and frowned. Telling his sister a story was the last thing he wanted to do before bed. Epically since he had just got this wicked new game for his handheld play-mate. He’d already made plans during his shower to play it now, even though he was supposed to be going to bed himself. Leave it to Sheva to put a damper in his fun time…

Albree’s expression lightened, his purple eyes sparkling as an idea crossed his mind. “Ok, I’ll tell you a story.” He couldn’t hide his mischievous grin.

Sheva beamed with excitement and scuttled her little body over to Albree’s bed. She crawled in under his covers and waited eagerly for the story to begin. Albree was about to tell her she wasn’t allowed there, but thought better of it. Telling his story wouldn’t take that long, so he began:

“One million thousand years ago, before the creation of man, there lived a unicorn.” Sheva’s eyes widened with glee, for unicorns were her favorite. “This unicorn was not white like most unicorns. It was black as coal. Its horn was as sharp as a sword, and its eyes were as red as fire. Evil radiated in those eyes.

“One day this black unicorn saw a rainbow in the sky. The rainbow’s colors were bright and cheery, leading the black unicorn like a beacon to his prey. Who did he hunt? He hunted those happy little unicorns you love, which live at the end of rainbows. Inattentively, they pranced there, eating their sherbet-poop and dancing around so happy they were farting butterflies. That is, until the black unicorn killed them all. The end.”

Albree wore a satisfied expression as Sheva’s face fell. Her ice-blue eyes fogged over with dismay.

“That’s it?” she asked, not even shaken by the fact Albree just killed off her beloved unicorns. “Tarrek tells better stories,” she said flatly, crawling back out from under Albree’s covers. Shaking her head, she left the room and never asked Albree to tell her a bedtime story ever again, which is just what Albree had hoped for.

From My Treasure Chest of Secrets II

Last time when I shared something out of My Treasure Chest of Secrets, I showed some poems from TJV. Well recently I stumbled upon a new song Sheva and the Serenities, a band from Orphan of the Shadows, were working on. I just can’t help but want to share some of it with you! However, I am taking a risk here because, well, Sheva is not only a diva but a Black Witch… So please DON’T TELL HER I’M SHARING THIS!

The song’s called “Obsession”

Your blue eyes, they’ve become my obsession
Can’t turn away no matter what
Now tears fall, like melting ice
Your sad face, glum like a rainy day,
Obsession, it keeps me here.
I can’t turn away, can’t take my eyes off of you
Obsession
Everything I do, it’s because of you.

I wish I knew what pains you so
Why you cry when you’re alone
I wish I knew
I wish I knew
To see into your heart of stone
Frozen over o so cold
I wish I could
I wish I could
Help you out
But as it is you shut me out.

Another working intro for the song is:

Dear friend, I hear you’re crying again
Feeling alone and helpless
Like the world is on your shoulders
And it’s weighing ya down
Like an anchor, drowning in the sea

And that’s all I’ve found… What do you think? I feel as if this might be 2 songs in one… Any suggestions for what intro you like better? Maybe I can pass the ideas on to Sheva, though of course, that would involve me letting her know I shared the lyrics… Oh, Blast, I’ll figure something out! If you have anything to say, go for it!

Elon’s New Photo!

As an author with an artistic ability, I cannot resist the urge to draw my characters. So why would I not draw the star character of Orphan of the Shadows? That’s a question we don’t need to ask, because I did draw her. This picture is of Elon Amæloriey, the orphan from Orphan of the Shadows.

Ever since Elon was 8 she’s been living on the streets, hating the world and everything in it. She’s been scraping for life off of anything she can, and constantly moving from place to place. Orphan of the Shadows picks up with her on the day she stumbles upon a gang called the Dragons. These people, dwelling in the bad side of town, open her eyes to a better life she never new existed. For more info on the book, check out the sneak peek and the back-matter.

Here is a snippet from the novel itself that inspired this drawing:

“She was small—still in her early teens—with long, ratted hair that made her head look like a broken bird’s nest. Her entire body was covered in grime, and despite the cold weather, her clothes were thin and covered with holes of every size. Blood dripped from a gash in her cheek, and a large bruise swelled over an eye.

“If Braerr described her in one word it would be ugly—that is for every part of her but her eyes. Despite the deep, unloving glower, her eyes were an amazing blue that seemed to glow like moonlight.”
